Hypnosis

What is Hypnosis?

When you think of hypnosis, or being hypnotized, does the image of twisting white and black spiral come into your brain? You might have this common perception because of movies and cartoons you saw when you were younger, and it might even be something you never thought actually existed, much less worked!

Hypnosis at Partners in Physical Therapy can help a person to gain better control over their feelings, habits they would like to stop, or undesired behavior. It can also help you to better cope with anxiety, pain, or stress, in a healthier way. To learn more about the benefits of hypnosis therapy, contact our clinic in Lake Charles today.

How can hypnosis therapy help me?

Harvard Health states “Hypnosis is one of the oldest forms of psychotherapy in the Western world…In spite of the prevailing myth, nobody can be hypnotized against his or her will. Instead, hypnosis is generally induced by focusing attention on positive mental imagery.”

Hypnosis can be used in conjunction with counseling or therapy. This is due to the fact that being in a hypnotic state allows a patient to closely examine feelings, memories, experiences, or thoughts that are too painful for them to delve into on a conscious level.

This can aid in healing by allowing a person to fully address the root cause of their pain and become fully aware of it. Some people even end up perceiving their experiences in a totally different way after being placed in a hypnotic state, and have even reported lessened anxiety and/or a decrease in the severity of certain phobias.

Hypnosis can also help people to reduce stress about upcoming events such as surgery, and it has also helped patients to deal with physical pain they’ve experienced due to illnesses such as fibromyalgia, cancer, IBS, or headaches.

What to expect during hypnosis

Hypnosis is nothing to be afraid of.

Your Partners in Physical Therapy therapist will explain what to expect before your session, and also go over your desired treatment outcomes as well.

They’ll speak to you in a gentle, quiet tone of voice, describing scenes that calm your mind and make you feel safe or secure.

Once you slip into the desired receptive state, your therapist will begin suggesting things you can do to change your undesired behavior, kick bad habits, stop worrying over future events, or achieving goals.

They may also prompt you to envision yourself mentally, for example, “What does it feel like to successfully stop biting your nails? How do you feel now that your operation is complete and in the past?”

Your therapist will help you to come out of a hypnotic state, or you may bring yourself out of it. They will tell you ahead of time how you can do this on your own, but rest assured, it’s not hard!
